Sally Crawford Elected Dallas Bar Association President-Elect
The Dallas Bar Association, a voluntary organization comprised of more than 10,000 lawyers, recently held its Annual Meeting, where the membership elected Sally Crawford, of Jones Day Dallas, its President-Elect. Crawford will serve as the association's 104th President in 2013.
Sally Crawford was elected to the DBA Board in 2004 and elected Chair of the Board of Directors in 2009. She has served as Chair of numerous DBA Committees, including the Admissions & Membeship Committee, Pro Bono Activities Committee and Peer Assistance Committee. She has also served as President of the Communtiy Service Fund and Co-Chair of the Campaign for Equal Access to Justice.

Weisser Receives the Association for Women in Science 2011 Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award.
Tammy Weisser (San Diego) received the 2011 Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award from the San Diego chapter of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) in recognition of her active involvement with AWIS over the past year, both by serving as a speaker for a number of AWIS events, as well as serving on the Strategy Sessions Committee. For example, in November 2010, she served as one of four panelists for the AWIS Alternative Careers Panel Discussion focusing on a career in Patent Law. She also served as a speaker for two separate career roundtables focusing on Patent Law at the 2011 Women in Science and Technology (WIST) conference. As a direct result of these speaking engagements, Tammy served as a mentor to three AWIS member women looking to pursue careers in the law. In addition to her speaking engagements, Tammy has been an integral member of the Strategy Sessions Committee, which serves to facilitate networking and provide peer-to-peer mentoring opportunities among AWIS members via meaningful discussions in small group settings. She secured Jones Day as a permanent location for the bi-monthly Strategy Sessions, and she continues to be instrumental in handling the logistics of each of the events held at Jones Day.
Jones Day's Rick Deane elected President of National Association of Former United States Attorneys
Deane served as United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, 1998-2001. He was also a Magistrate Judge, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. He previously served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the District from 1980 through 1994. Deane is co-chair of the Firm's Corporate Criminal Investigations Practice and a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers.

Silicon Valley Office Hosts Northern California "Women in IP: Tips for Successful Negotiation" Event
On April 6, 2010, Jones Day's Silicon Valley and San Francisco offices hosted an event entitled "Women in IP: Tips for Successful Negotiation" - the third in an ongoing series of CLE presentations for female in-house clients and potential clients, that was developed in 2009 by a group of female associates located in the Silicon Valley office. Guests included in-house counsel from local high-tech and biotech companies, many of whom have attended previous events in this "Women in IP" series. Peggy Ward, a partner in the Silicon Valley office, served as one of four panelists and shared her experience negotiating antitrust matters on behalf of clients before the Department of Justice. The next "Women in IP" presentation is tentatively scheduled for Summer 2010.

Tammy Weisser (San Diego) co-chaired and organized the Lawyers Club of San Diego's 5th Annual Balance Symposium Luncheon, entitled "Everyone Balances: Reshaping the Work-Family Debate," which was attended by more than 150 women and men from the San Diego legal community. The luncheon featured a distinguished panel of men and women, including Anthony Insogna (San Diego), offering insights, experiences and practical suggestions regarding the elusive balance between work and family. The discussion also probed the similarities and differences between how men and women approach balance, the resulting professional consequences to each, and the impact and efficacy of framing balance as solely a women’s issue. To offer more perspective, the panel compared and contrasted experiences at different size law firms, and discussed major cultural and economic trends that impact the work-family balance debate, including shifting gender roles, changing generational expectations, and the impact on balance of the current economic climate. The Lawyers Club of San Diego is a specialty bar association comprised of female and male attorneys, judges, law students and others in the San Diego community who share the goal of advancing the status of women in law and society, and the Balance Committee works to identify, develop, and promote policies and practices to facilitate work/life balance and encourage the hiring, retention and advancement of women in the legal profession.

The San Diego office hosted a CLE IP Roundtable breakfast seminar, entitled ""Key 2011 Patent Cases Unveiled: Myriad Genetics and Therasense." The first speaker was IP Practice co-chair Brian Poissant (New York), who discussed Jones Day's cross-office and cross-practice representation of client Myriad Genetics in the SDNY and CAFC in the ACLU v. Myriad case, which concerns fundamental questions of patent eligibility for DNA molecules and presents some interesting standing issues. The second speaker was IP partner Joe Patino (San Diego), who discussed his successful defense of Bridge Medical in McKesson v. Bridge Medical by securing a judgment of unenforceability of the asserted patent at trial due to inequitable conduct, as well as provided insights and practice tips in view of recent en banc CAFC decision in Therasense v. Becton Dickinson.

Tammy Weisser (San Diego) hosted the AWIS bi-monthly "Strategy Sessions" meeting in the Jones Day San Diego office on February 7, 2011, which was entitled "Develop Your Career Success" and attended by over 40 people. The goal of the Strategy Sessions is to facilitate networking and provide peer-to-peer mentoring opportunities among AWIS members via meaningful discussions in small group settings. AWIS is a national organization that is committed to supporting the advancement of women in science and science-related fields.
